Kahuku is one of those places where Oahu history lives. A town that was built around the sugar business, the plantation past remains an ever-present part of life here. That's in no small part due to the many that still live in family homes, passed down from the previous generations who toiled in the fields or in the mill. Plantation life is remembered vividly in Kahuku.
It's also recalled just as strongly in the homes themselves. Come to Kahuku and you'll see something as close as you can get to what those communities looked like back in the day. You'll be amazed at how many aren't merely 'Plantation Style', they're the real thing.
Dating primarily from the 1940's, when the industry was thriving, these picturesque homes are warm, inviting residences – and never more than one story. They follow the general template of 1,000 to 2,000 sq ft, commonly offering 3BRs, except for the Planation Manager homes. Those, as you can imagine, will add another 1,000 sq ft or so on average, reflecting the past occupants higher place in the company hierarchy.
The Second Wave of Homes While the sugar mill ultimately closed in 1971, ending what was then the economic foundation of the town, real estate here remained strong. It's easy to see how that played out, with the sudden surge of homes that were added in the 1980's, taking up lands that were formerly farmed.
Those retained the plantation style almost entirely, differing only with a 2nd story here and there, ensuring that the traditions and lifestyle of this North Shore neighborhood were honored. They also hold onto the interior range of dimensions within them.
One difference between the original homes and the 80's additions are the lot sizes. The average original home will have a larger lot, most running from 6,000 to over 10,000 sq ft. The 80's tend to top out at around the 5500 sq ft, though you will find exceptions.
Malaekahana - Beachfront Luxury Just south of Kahuku's main area is one community that does not follow this blueprint – the oceanfront luxury homes of Malaekahana. The properties make up a line of rectangle shaped lots that stretch from Kamehameha Hwy to the beach. They occupy lands of from 25,000 to 45,000 sq ft of very desirable real estate.
There's a surprising variety in the years these houses were built, starting in the 1940's and ending in the first decade of the 2000's. The residences come in sizes that range from 1,269 to over 8,000 sq ft. However, there are 2 separate houses on at least a couple of these properties and these lots have the room for it.
