Maunawili, located on Oahu’s Windward side in Kailua, is a peaceful neighborhood nestled against the Olomana section of the Koolau Mountains. The neighborhood features lush vegetation, tropical fruit trees and flowers, gently sloping terrain and small streams that border some Maunawili properties. It’s a purely residential neighborhood off of the Pali Highway that’s an easy five minute drive to the shops and restaurants in both Kailua Town and Enchanted Lake Shopping Center, Kailua’s beautiful beaches, and approximately 25 minutes to downtown Honolulu. Maunawili is home to a lovely neighborhood park, entrances to the Maunawili Falls hiking trail and Olomana’s 3 Peaks trail, and Olomana Golf Course. Consistent rain falls keep the landscaping and vegetation green, and the Windward side’s tradewinds help keep temperatures comfortable most of the year.
Maunawili is known for beautiful single-family homes on the higher end of
Kailua’s real estate market. As a general rule, these homes are spacious and sit on large lots with landscaping that takes advantage of the natural vegetation that thrives in this area. Most of the homes in Maunawili offer 3-4 bedrooms and 2-3 bathrooms laid out in spacious, open floor plans. Houses on the smaller end of the spectrum offer 1,700 - 2,500 sq ft of living space. Maunawili’s larger homes, however, feature as many as 7 bedrooms and 3,000-5,500 sq ft of living space. You’ll find design elements like vaulted ceilings, natural wood cabinets and floors, granite countertops, and floor-to-ceiling windows that take advantage of the mountain views in many of the neighborhood’s homes. The large homes tend to feature a private unit for guests or extended family that could also be rented out on a long-term basis.
One thing that makes homes in Maunawili so appealing is the expansive lots that most sit on. Standard lot sizes are in the 10,000 - 15,000 sq ft range, and a number of lots are much larger, ranging from 24,000 sq ft up to 2 acres. The large lots allow residents ample room to plant gardens, put in a pool and sometimes a pool house, or simply give children space to play as they grow up. In addition residents enjoy views of the green mountains rising around them and the golf course fairways. The majority of homes were built in the mid-1960s to early 1970s, although there are newer homes, built as recently as 2007.
Maunawili is a charming Kailua neighborhood that residents love because of its beautiful surroundings, quiet atmosphere and close-knit community. It feels like old Hawaii with touches of island luxury. Buyers who appreciate space, serene surroundings, and Hawaii’s lush vegetation should take a close look at Maunawili.
