Kaopa is another of the Kailua neighborhoods that lies out of the way, sitting directly between Enchanted Lakes and Highway 72. Purely a bedroom community, the residents come here for a life undisturbed by the growing tourist traffic that's hit the Windward Side in recent years.
Residents here emerge from their quiet streets when groceries are needed, to head off to work or to enjoy a day at one of the nearby beaches of Kailua or Waimanalo. Then they return contentedly to the serenity of Kaopa's avenues and their homes.
The first houses in Kaopa went up in the 1970's, commuters drawn to it by the convenience of living right off the Pali Highway. Houses were added periodically over the years, filling the lots during the next two decades. Since then many of the residences have been remodeled, including numerous additions that have increased the original dimensions.
The Homes There is greater variety in lot sizes than other Kailua communities, the lower end starting at 6,000 sq ft. The largest top out at a nice sized 11,000 sq ft, leaving a lot of property to work with here.
These homes are also known for generally larger interior dimensions, making them attractive to families with children or the multi-generational households that are common in Hawaii.
Most are two story, granting more space and separation that can help with privacy and noise levels, always a benefit.
From your windows, and lanais, you can look off to the towering Koolau Mountains, with their astonishing green elevations. After the rains, locals love to watch the temporary waterfalls cascading down those heights, adding a sparkling flourish to the scene.
Some also are able to enjoy from their property the calming vista of the Ka'elepulu Pond, better known as the waters of Enchanted Lakes next door.
You'll find that Kaopa homes for sale end up changing owners for $800K to $1.2M. Buyers love the quiet contentment of these avenues and the constant companionship of those eternal mountains. Residents here know it's not always about the beach in Hawaii.
