The Wilola Apartments is an L-shaped building that occupies the mauka-Diamond Head corner where Pensacola St meets Wilder Ave. Directly facing it from the other side of Pensacola is the historic Makiki Cemetery, visited not long ago by
Japan's Prime Minister Abe to honor the many early Japanese migrants to Hawaii who are here.
Some have concerns about living near a feature like this, but it's pure green grass and the assurance of that terrain remaining open and undeveloped are definite points in its favor. With the acceleration of
building upward across Honolulu, you have something unique here.
The remaining lots around you are primarily occupied by the always pleasing sight of
Makiki vintage plantation style single family homes and other residences that rarely go higher than the Wilola, keeping the atmosphere uncrowded.
The condos themselves all have layouts with 2BR/1BA, but varying sizes from 652 to 742 sq ft in them. The 2 largest floor plans – 740 and 742 sq ft – have the extra den that you can use as you like. Lanais come in greater ranges, some with one (48 sq ft), others having two outdoor spaces, totaling 80 to 148 sq ft between them.
From there you can look out at the surrounding neighborhood with its unmistakably local Hawaii feel and up to the green mountains that climb upward to the sky.
Your commute isn't difficult, Downtown just a few minutes away driving or bus stops are a few steps away, with locations on Wilder, Pensacola and Thurston Ave to choose from. H1 is a quick trip too, with the westward side's entrance a couple of minutes away, off Lunalilo St. Anywhere to the east is accessible by getting on H1E from Piikoi St, another few minutes in the car at most.
The keiki's commute is even faster than yours with both Stevenson Middle and Roosevelt High Schools about 3 blocks mauka from Wilola.
Easy reach, but removed from the growing hectic pace of
urban Honolulu. Come back to these low-rise avenues and you'll find it harder and harder to leave.
