- Address: 1700 Makiki Street, Honolulu, HI 96822.
- Built in 1956, with 2 stories and 46 units of Studio & 1BR floor plans.
- Amenities: Swimming Pool, Storage, BBQ, Recreation Deck.
- Pets: No (verify).
- Interesting: Retro lovers rejoice! The Oahuan is something out of a postcard from 1950s Hawaii.
The Oahuan isn't a throwback to the Hawaii Mid-Century Modern lifestyle. It's the real deal. The lava rock walls, wooden jalousie doors & windows and even the pool the 2 buildings overlook right in the center of the property. Tropical plants and palm trees, of course.
Until recently this was one of the
condos in Honolulu people loved to look at, but not necessarily buy into. Units were actually going for the mid 5 figures in 2015(!). The reasons were (1) the fact that it was a Co-op, which isn't as preferable as a condominium. (2) More importantly, it was Leasehold and time was ticking down loudly on its term.
Incredibly, both issues are now eliminated, or soon will be. The Oahuan has converted to a Fee Simple Condominium, giving you full ownership and a more streamlined governing process for the property.
The increasingly attractive units are divided evenly between Studio/1BA (400 sq ft) and 1BR/1BA (525 sq ft) layouts. All the 1BR are on the ground floor, with larger interiors, but no lanai. The 2nd floor residences is where the Studio are found, their 50 sq ft lanais looking down at the pool, with Japanese-style sliding doors between them and the inside.
It's a mere 2 blocks east to Punahou School and the same distance makai to the overflowing recreation options at Makiki District Park. You live in a part of Honolulu where an evening walk is pure delight, taking in the Old Kamaaina homes and atmosphere, the huge shade trees and the slower pace back here.
That also puts Punahou St, with its H1 entrance just down the way, and its connection to King & Beretania's grocery & convenience stores, restaurants.
Keeaumoku Street is only the next one over, your line right to Walmart/Sams Club and then into the biggest mall in Hawaii, Ala Moana Center. A few minutes and you're browsing the largest selection of stores, restaurants and entertainment we've got.
Amazingly, even with the changes at this condo, the price point has remained in the low, low six figures, which includes the fee in it. If you've dreamt of 'how it was' in a simpler, more romantic Hawaii, the Oahuan should be your first stop on your condo shopping trip.
