Driving through Ewa Villages is almost like entering a living historical survey of
Ewa Beach real estate. It's where you'll find the Plantation past sitting next to the West side's development future, all contained in a little over 1 square mile.
It all starts with some of the most amazing vintage homes on the Island – these aren't just 'old houses'.
Old Hawaii The signs proclaiming a home to be a State Historic Residence are a common sight here. Stop to read the signs and you'll find dates from the 1920's up into the early 40's, placing them in the prime early 20th Century era when sugar was essentially the entire local economy.
We linger on these homes because they're consistently a significant slice of the real estate sales inventory in Ewa Villages. So, what are these classic homes like?
Generally, these charming houses span 900 to 1,200 sq ft inside, all on one floor. They also tend to have larger lot sizes, some topping 7,800 sq ft! The style is mainly pure Plantation, with roofs that, from the outside, seem to be ½ the house.
Following the 1940's homes were added over time, but the next real building surge in Ewa Villages waited until the late 1980's with the closing of the plantations, extending into the early years of this century.
It wasn't only houses, either. The
Ewa Villages Golf Course was added in 1996 and the accompanying communities along its fairways not long afterward. One example is Lokahi Greens, established in 1999.
The Lokahi homes are characterized not only by views of the links, but also a larger interior footprint than their vintage neighbors, both horizontally and vertically. 2 stories are common in these houses and dimensions go up to 1,400 + sq ft and as much as 4 bedrooms.
What's interesting is that many homes constructed elsewhere in Ewa Villages at this time were built in the traditional plantation style. For those who love the look, but not the upkeep that can come with older structures, Ewa Villages still might be the right choice.
What's Next The future of Ewa Villages? It's already started. Today, though, this community is getting ready to welcome a new project, based again around the golf course.
Castle & Cooke have begun work on
Ho'onani at Ewa Villages, which will initially add 62 homes to the landscape. 7 different floor plans, including duplexes, of 3 to 5 bedrooms are available, with spaces as large as 2,136 sq ft. With Central A/C, walk-in closets and covered lanais, they may use some of the plantation elements in their design, but the intention is a more modern lifestyle.
Ewa Villages real estate is a fascinating study of how Oahu lived from yesterday to today. It's a place where you can dive deeply into a little of old Hawaii, either by actually living in a home from those treasured times or just as an admiring neighbor. Your choice.
