Pono Kai is a beachfront property in
Kapaa that has residences within 35 yards from the ocean. Along with
Kapaa Beach Park in front of it, the community has another water border on the south in the Waikaea Canal that empties into the Pacific.
The first nine buildings, containing 217 units, were built during the initial construction in 1978, designated as Buildings A – J (There is no ‘I’ building). Building K, which is connected to the lobby structure, was added in 1991. This resulted in another twenty-four residential units and three commercial spaces. The studio to two bedroom condos have interiors of 320 to 1,403 Sq Ft with one lanai exterior. Some of the one and two bedrooms on the third floor also have a loft area of 292 Sq Ft, which some use as an additional bedroom.
One hundred and sixty-seven of the units, making up the vast majority, are timeshare units, including all of Building K. That leaves seventy-four that are wholly owned here.
Another factor to be aware of is that, while most have converted to fee simple, there are still some Leasehold properties, the lease set to expire in 2044.
Each condo has one unassigned, uncovered parking space. Ceiling fans are throughout the living areas and the bedrooms, with some owners having added a split a/c system as well. A shared, key-access coin laundry facility is found on the first floor of every building. There are elevators in all of the residential buildings as well, for those on the higher floors.
Pono Kai has a dedicated lobby structure with 24-hour desk service to handle both rental check-ins & outs as well as any immediate issues owners may be having.
Most of these condos have ocean views that range from peekaboo to what would be completely unobstructed if not for the few palm trees lining the beach side of the property.
Amenities & Things To Do The
southern end of Kapaa Beach begins right off of Pono Kai’s front lawn, starting right where Waikaea Canal joins up with the ocean. This is sand to sink into as you lay back to get some sun or just watch the surf come and go. This is a mile long beach with space to keep you from feeling crowded most of the time. You can always move down the way if you do. The swimming is good here during much of the year, in part because of a protective reef that brings the swells down as they get closer. However, caution is needed during the winter months when even the reef can’t hold back the strength of this season’s bigger waves.
A footbridge over Waikaea Canal takes you to
Fuji Beach immediately on the other side. The reef comes much closer to the shoreline here, giving you a protected swimming and wading area that might be a better bet in the winter. The footbridge is part of the
Ke Ala Hele Makalae path that is 8 1/2 miles for walking, jogging or biking next to the coastline. Take it to visit other nearby beaches or get some steps in while you revel in the views.
