The Kona Makai is an oceanfront community, the nearest condos located at the very edge of the coastline, only 20 yards from the Pacific. The complex is gated, but only at night to add further security and privacy during those hours.
Its six concrete buildings form a horseshoe shape, with two longer buildings forming the northern arm and three making up the southern one. In the middle is a large, open courtyard that has green lawn and palm trees most of the way, only ending when it reaches the pool on the ocean end.
The one and two bedroom condos have interiors of 687 to 1,194 Sq Ft with one or two lanais exterior. There are lofts in the larger floor plans of both the one & two bedrooms that are large enough for a queen sized bed with room left over. All units have the unique feature of a passthrough window or dutch doors from the kitchen to the lanai outside.
Please note that these are Leasehold properties, the lease expiring in 2039.
Ceiling fans are built-in to the residences, with some owners adding window a/c units themselves. Each condo has one assigned parking space that can be covered or uncovered. You also have surfboard storage, but that is restricted to the owners’ use only. A Washer/Dryer is in every unit. The buildings are all walk-ups, there are no elevators on the property. There is a solar pv system that powers the common areas, reducing the electric costs.
Most of these residences have ocean views, many partial to completely unobstructed.
Amenities & Things To Do Once inside the entrance to Kona Makai, you’ll see the two tennis courts, both up on the roof of a single-level parking garage. The pool, spa and BBQs all have ocean views, the only things closer to the waves in the recreation area being the BBQs and a deck area lined with lounge chairs where you can almost feel the spray.
North of you only about ½ miles is
Honl’s Beach, a bodyboarding institution since it was actually invented there. Bring your boogie board and get on the waves that inspired this sport and continue to challenge riders. As good as the swells are for that, swimming is hit or miss, especially if the conditions are too strong, but relaxing on this small, but never crowded beach always makes for a good day.
Banyans Beach is another draw, but for surfers, bringing out locals and visitors who have the skill level to take on the waves here. Sitting one mile from you to the south, that level may not include you, but many love to watch the show from the beach as others try their luck out on the surf.
